Baroness Haleh Afshar

Haleh Afshar is a Professor of Women’s Studies at York University and possesses wide knowledge of gender issues. Viewed as a public voice of Muslim women, due to her numerous contributions to voluntary and community groups, and as a Muslim woman herself, Haleh can offer the WNC a particular understanding of issues affecting Muslim women.

Haleh was a founding member of the Muslims Women’s Network-UK and helped to successfully raise the necessary funds to enable the group to become independent. Haleh frequently speaks on behalf of the group, representing their views at meetings with ministers. Most recently she reported on their work at the House of Lords during a debate on women.

Haleh has an impressive academic record and has been teaching courses on women and gender since the late 1970’s.  She is also the Visiting Professor of Islamic Law at the Faculté Internationale de Droit Comparée at Strasbourg. She has edited a number of publications that focus on women politics and society, both in the UK and around the world. She has also published several of her works on topics from Islam and Feminism, to Race and Ethnicity. Haleh has a great many contacts, not only in the UK but also across the globe. As part of her academic work and practical research, Haleh has organised, facilitated and ran focus groups with women in India, Jordon, Morocco, Egypt, Tunisia and France.
