Closure of the Women's National Commission PDF Print E-mail

As part of the Government’s drive to cut costs and increase transparency, accountability and efficiency, the role, size and scope of government quangos have formed part of a broad Coalition Government review.

The Women’s National Commission (WNC), set up in 1969 as the national, independent organisation to present the views of women to government, is an advisory Non Departmental Public Body (NDPB) which falls into this category.

It has been announced by the Government today that a number of public bodies are set to be merged, abolished or streamlined as part of this process. The WNC will be closed down on 31 December 2010 and its core functions brought into the Government Equalities Office (GEO), its sponsor department. Click here for details.

The GEO intends to consult with women later in the Autumn in order to develop a new model of engagement to bring women closer to Ministers. This will include engagement with WNC Partners.

The priorities of the WNC Chair and Board of Commissioners  are to engage with the Government to ensure that WNC Partners have an opportunity to influence the new central approach, to work to protect funding designated to promote gender equality and to ensure that the core functions of the WNC, which historically have had such an important impact on the lives of women, will be maintained. With a 500% increase on outreach activities during the last 15 months, the WNC has consolidated its core commitment of staying in close and regular contact with its Partners, to hear your views and to share relevant news and developments on a range of gender issues. Over the last 12 to 15 months - our 40th Anniversary year - there has been a significant increase in our activity which has been overseen by our Chair and Board of 14 Commissioners who have either chaired or been personally involved in all of the activities and we want to thank all of you who have participated in these events. We would therefore like to take this opportunity to provide you with a summary of this activity in order to keep you informed of work. Click on the charts to see the full image.

WNC’s 40th Anniversary Day PDF Print E-mail

Saturday 24 October 2009 saw the 40th anniversary of the very first meeting of the Executive Committee of the Women's National Commission. The then Lord Chancellor, Lord Gardiner, attended the meeting and spoke about the Divorce Reform Act.  The first meeting agreed to establish Specialist Committees to examine important areas of the time in greater detail, and these included, Women and Work; Education and Training; International issues and the UN; Economic issues; and Women in Society.

Forty years on, the need to highlight the inequalities that women experience day to day remains, even though some of the focus, emphasis and issues might have changed.

We want once again to thank all of our partners, friends and supporters in 2009 and all those who have supported us over the past 40 years.

To learn more about the first WNC meeting, the changing face of WNC and the changes on gender equality since the 60s, please check out our new publication here.
